Case study · Titan2 Film

An independent film studio wanted bigger clients. We found them.

Titan2 Film is an independent studio based in Ireland. Its co-founder, Ian, came to me needing more of the right work. Here’s how we went from a profile of the ideal client to named companies, a reason to get in touch with each one, and the first message in Ian’s own voice.

Targeting, research, first contact

The brief

Ian knows the work Titan2 does best: films for people building something genuinely new. What he didn’t have was a list of named companies, the time to work out who to talk to inside each one, or a reason they’d want to hear from a small studio right now.

Before any targeting, we did the groundwork on why clients choose Titan2. That pointed to the segment where its record counts most: health and medical innovation, where companies are constantly launching, expanding, winning approvals and changing leaders.

From 25 companies to the 3 to approach first

  1. Phase 01 Identify 25 candidate companies found from public sources, each matched to the client profile.
  2. Phase 02 Prioritise 10 strongest companies, after researching all 25 for fit, a live signal and a named contact.
  3. Phase 03 Open the conversation 3 companies with the sharpest moment, ready to approach, each with a LinkedIn note and email in Ian’s voice.

Phase 01

Identify

There was no list to start from. We also didn’t decide in advance what would count as a good reason to get in touch. So we went looking: weekly industry news, company announcements and funding trackers, checking every company against the client profile and backing every fit with a named source.

The reasons turned out to be as varied as the companies: a move into a new market, a first product in patients’ hands, a commercial milestone, a launch, new money. Anything that looked risky was flagged for Ian, not quietly dropped.

Ian reviewed the full list before any deeper research began.

What we left off

Global device makers with launches in the news. A well-funded imaging marketplace with nothing to film. Very early names with no product we could verify. A shorter, honest list beats a padded one.

Phase 02

Prioritise

We researched all 25 against three questions: is it a fit, is something happening there right now, and can we identify the best person to talk to? Each was answered on its own, not blended into one score, so a big news story couldn’t hide the lack of a way in. Digging deeper turned up signals the first pass couldn’t see: new leaders, regulatory approvals, companies committing to a new market. Then we ranked them all, and the strongest 10 went forward.

  • Fit

Does the company match the profile of a client Titan2 wins and keeps?

  • Signal

Is something happening right now that makes Titan2 relevant? Cited, or recorded as not found.

  • Contact

Is there a named person who owns the decision? Found from public sources, never guessed.

  • Hot All three confirmed
  • Warm One missing
  • Nurture Fit only, watch for a trigger
  • Disqualified Fit didn’t hold, or a blocker

Where the judgement showed

Most companies on the list had something happening. Ranking them, and knowing which ones to leave out, is what decided the top 10.

  • Two multinationals disqualified. Their buying runs through global teams, not a relationship a small studio can build.
  • Two big names marked Unclear and kept out of the top 10. A fit on paper isn’t a way in.
  • Six factual discrepancies flagged, not smoothed over. One company’s headquarters turned out to be on a different continent from where the first pass placed it.
Every signal and every contact cited to a source.

Open the conversation

From the top 10, we took the three with the sharpest moment and got started. Each gets a LinkedIn note Ian sends himself and a short email in his name, and nothing goes out until he’s approved it. Here’s one of the emails, redacted.

Hi xxxxx,

Welcome to Ireland. I saw xxxxxxx chose it for its European base, and that you’re leading it yourself.

Every company that sets up here hits the same wall in year one: nobody here knows who you are yet. Not the people you want to hire, not the partners, not the customers.

A good film fixes that faster than anything else I know. I’m Ian, co-founder of Titan2 Film, a studio here that makes films for health innovators.

If a coffee would help while you settle in, it’s on me.

Ian

The highlighted line is the insight that earns a reply. The wording changes for every client. The thinking doesn’t.

“The first outreach I’ve been proud to put my name to.”

“I make films. Finding clients was never part of the craft. Ed did for us what we try to do for every client: he found what was true about each company before saying a word to them. And he showed me where every reason came from. I trust it because I can check it.”
